Annette’s autism story
March 30th, 2007Hey all. I need help badly. Recently, David has been blowing me off entirely. I know he has better listening skills than this. I’m not getting through to him at all.
Last night, he wanted something that was stored high. I didn’t want to climb and I didn’t want him climbing so I told him to wait on Dad. Well, he didn’t pay a bit of attention to what I said and he climbed up there and got it. He claimed up and down I told him he could go up there and get it. He called me a freakin’ liar. From what I can tell, he thinks he is grown up and doesn’t have to listen to a word I say (he has trouble differentiating between fantasy and reality). I have told him that until he is 18, he is a CHILD. My hubby called him a little man once (big mistake).
I’m at wits end. I have no idea how to get through to him. No matter what the consequence, he just doesn’t care. I can’t take away all of his activities (TV, video games, computer, etc.) or he would replace them with destroying my house type of activities. I have tried having him earn rewards. That works for half a second and then doesn’t.
At some point, he has to learn to do what he is told no matter what he thinks. I have tried giving him reasons for what I tell him to do or not do. He told me my reasons weren’t good enough.
Nothing I do helps. I need a new answer. Help!
