School screwing my son over!
April 1st, 2007Reed’s IEP is scheduled for this Wed. I have an advocate from Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities coming with my husband and I. I guess the school decided to stop pushing us to send him to MRDD. They evidently are going to offer an extended day (going for 1 hr a day now) but we will see what that means. Last Wed was his first day back at school after serving a 3 day suspension. The day he got suspended his speech and autism teachers were both at a workshop. His aide walked him into his classroom where one of the other autistic kids was crying (crying has always made him flip out) and he went over and smacked her on the head. He calmed down (so they thought) and threw a pop bottle at the chalkboard. They were holding his arms down so he would not hit or bite them and they took him to the time-out room where he was to calm down. I had instructed them to do this so he could calm himself only the principal stayed in with him and kept telling him not to hit himself and that only made him hit more. When she kept saying this and put a pillow on the side of his head that he was hitting. He became more agitated and bit her arm through her suit jacket. The principal had given me a paper to sign when i had droppped him off at school but i would not sign it on the spot. When i picked him up after his 1 hour of school. i was told about the incident and told that if i signed the paper he would not be suspended but if i did not he would be suspended. I still refused to sign on the spot because i wanted to discuss it with my husband. Now just the other day I got a letter from Job and Family Services, Protective Unit that their agency was notified and the have concerns and need me to come in to discuss them. It is always something. I was ticked, this better have been just “policy” to report the incident because i am not in the mood for the school to cause more trouble.
We have been doing time outs in his room for hitting, kicking etc. I sign and explain why he is in time out and remind him again when his time out is over. Does anyone have anything that might be helpful to get him to stop hitting people and objects so much. I need any advice you can offer.
