Can people develop autism during their preteen years?
May 29th, 2007Andie:I was wondering if it was possible for someone to develop autism after the age of three, which is when the diagnosis is normally made. The kid showed no obvious signs of autism as a toddler or young child, but lately (ever since she was twelve) she’s shown many signs such as cornering up and not wanting to be near people and feeling unconfortable when they get too close. She also seems to be a bit sensitive to sounds. I’ve also noticed that she constantly plays with her hair and seems to pull on it. I just wanted to know if these were signs of autism and if it was possible that she had a pretty normal childhood and that she could have developed it instead of being born with it.
Larry:She could have ADD(attention deficiet disorder),PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)common in abuse victims , OCD(obsessive compulsive disorder), or SAD(social anxiety disorder). I myself suffer from SAD I am extremely shy around people I don’t know especially in crowded settings. all off these disorders have similar or crossover symptons, it might even be a combination.
