Hyperlexia and Autism
May 29th, 2007CHINTSYE:Can anyone tell me about hyperlexia and also how it relates to autism. No copy paste stuff please…just any knowledge you may have. I have a 2 year old son with Autism who has started to point to letters and numbers and say what they are clearly.
smartde:I am a Speech/Language Pathologist with 34 years of experience. Hyperlexia is a syndrome where there is a higher than normal ability to read th eprinted word but extreme difficulty in understanding it. Usually a child who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome may show sighns of hyperlexia. As with children with Asperger’s children who have hyperlexia have an extremely difficult time communicating despite their larrge vocabulary from reading. Their speech is usually characterized by echolalia where they repeat words and phrases nonsensically. Is your child receiving speech therapy now? If not you should look into early intervention for him. The early he receives remediation the better it is.
