Violence and autism
July 31st, 2007Ask:
Is it possible that a child with an autism whose frequent manner of expression is using acts of violence against other children, would actually benefit from more discipline from his parents?
Answer:
No, a child with autism who is violent to other children is unable to relate to his peers and unable to express his feelings.
Inability to interact with peers is often a sign of autism, or sometimes Asperger’s Disorder, and even ADD. But the best way to deal with these children is to teach them coping skills.
When they are in a social situation they are not happy with, there needs to be a code word or signal that they need to be removed from that situation, without reprimand. When they recognize that, they are making progress in becoming better adjusted people.
