Activities of autism children

Ask:

What kind of activities can autism kids do?

Answer:

Kids with autism can do all sorts of things! Higher functioning kids can go on to college and have a career in a field they enjoy. Some even go on to get advanced degrees, like Dr. Temple Grandin, who has autism and has designed many of the cattle shutes used in slaughterhouses all over the world. They can often be found in fields that accept individual quirkiness, like colleges, research, engineering, art, etc.

Others who are not as high functioning may be able to do simple jobs that they are specifically trained for. They may look for a quiet place with little sensory stimulation, or they may enjoy being around people.

Kids who are more severe may go to a sheltered workshop type situation where they work under the supervision of someone doing tasks such as stuffing envelopes, putting newsletters together, etc.

People with really really severe autism may need to live in a group home or setting with a high level of care so they don’t injure themselves or anyone else. They may not work at a regular job, but they learn daily living skills.

Autism is so different in each person, and can vary so much in the degree to which it affects a person and how he/she functions that this is a really hard question to answer. Hope this helps!
