Q:

My cousin and has autism and is often referred to as a “retard” by people who don’t know any better. Why do they do this. This is so mean. My best friend even uses the word retard when i’m out of earshot like at the mall or something

Answer:
The word retard has seemed to have taken on a new life with younger people. They use is to the saturation point without realizing the hurt it inflicts on the mentally disabled. The connotation associated with the word implies that someone is not human or sub-human at best. To dehumanize anyone in a shallow attempt at humor gets my blood boiling and many people today do it without giving it a second thought. Since autistics rarely defend themselves, they are some of the easiest targets for this kind of verbal abuse. I know, I see it everyday of my life.
