My 9 month old keeps on bumping his forehead on the crib

Q: I have a 9 month old baby boy and sometimes he would bump his forehead on his crib and even when he’s in the walker.

Could this be a sign of autism or any other child disorder? Or is he just playing around? Is that a normal kind of play or is he just getting attention? I’m worried.

Answer:

Babies and toddlers who are not autistic normally demonstrate some behaviors of autism, such as head banging or hand flapping, at some period during their development.

In autism there tends to be a global developmental delay or a regression in development. There would be multiple behavioral clues, such as a general shrinking from human touch, poor or no eye contact, abnormal speech development (at this age, no babbling or imitating), and no or unusual play or exploration.

If your baby has a head – banging habit in the absence of other signs of autism, then there is no reason to suspect autism.
