Is autism a handicap or a personality?
September 19th, 2007We need to do more to raise autism awareness. First, most kids with autism are not drugged, as there really aren’t any drugs for autism. Second, it’s not something they can control, it is a physical disability of the brain, not a personality disorder. Mercury has a lot to do with it, but it only triggers something that the child is born with. My child is autistic and was so from birth. You ‘experts’ tell me how a newborn infant can have a personality disorder?! If you’re going to be so ignorant about a topic, for goodness sakes don’t answer a question just to get points. Here’s how autism affects the brain, the way they process information from their senses, and their level of functioning.
The brain contains over 100 billion nerve cells called neurons (say: nur-ahns). Each neuron may have hundreds or thousands of connections to other nerve cells in the brain and body. The connections (which are made by releasing neurotransmitters) let different neurons in different areas of the brain – areas that help you see, feel, move, remember, and much more – work together.
For some reason, some of the cells and connections in the brain of a kid with autism – especially those that affect communication, emotions, and senses – don’t develop properly or get damaged. Scientists are still trying to understand how and why this happens.
