Is autism an autoimmune disease?
September 21st, 2007Autism is not so much a disease, it is a disorder. The difference is that diseases are something that is caused by an outside effect such as bacteria or virus. Disorders are a result of something gone awry with the neurological system and can’t be caught by another person.
There have been some links to Autism and immune system difficiencies, but they have not been researched enough to conclude that Autism is a result of immune system problems. The problem with Autism is that it’s cause is unknown, though experts have concluded that it is most definitely genetic. The underlying cause remains unknown at this time.
Autism is classified as a neurological disorder and research shows that the brain of Autistic person is not wired the same as the brain of a neurotypical(non autistic )person, and the brains of the two work differently in certain ares of the brain.
