Is Autism a by-product of inbreeding?
September 23rd, 2007To a first approximation, no. In the last 20 years, the rate of autism has been increasing, although the amount of out-breeding (breeding between different races, cultures and societies) has been increasing as well.
Certain types of mental retardation are associated with familial inbreeding, but they can also occur since these genetic traits occur in many different groups.
Although some genetic mutations are associated with autism, many with those mutations do not get it. There is no known gene that causes autism, so there is no reason to believe inbreeding was necessary and sufficient to produce autism.
