Answer:
Many states have programs designed for single mothers in your situation that are run by the local welfare office. They will pay for child care for you while you work a part time job, as long as you meet certain criteria. There are hour limitations per week, as well as a dollar amount cap per week or day of care. Some states are better than others. It doesn’t hurt to get ahold of your closest welfare office and ask, after all that is what they are there for. If they do not support or run the programs, they should at the very least know who does. You can also try the local unemployment office. They have a large list of resources available to facilitate people getting back to work.
There are also many charities and grant organizations out there that will help as long as you don’t mind filling out forms and wading through some paperwork. In the end they are usually worth the trouble.
If all else fails, you can solicit local radio stations and newspapers to run a small add asking for donations for assistance in the care of your autistic son. Usually there are many people who will send a great deal of money to help just for the simple reason that someone asked.
You can also google search “funding for parents of autistic children” and wade through those results to find a program that will help you.
