What is autism exactly?
September 25th, 2007Autism is a spectrum of mental conditions affecting 1 in 150 children (and there’s autistic adults too!) The “triad of impairments” present in autism are:
1. Impaired Communication
2. Impaired Social Relating
3. Restricted and Repeative Behaviors and Interests.
People with autism can have any range of IQs.
Everybody with autism is different, and the symptoms can vary on the diagnosis. (Asperger’s, Rett’s, High/Low Functioning Autism, etc.)
Now I will tell you what autism personally means to me (I have Asperger’s)
It means I can tell you about a cat I saw 5 years ago but can’t tell what you are feeling.
It means not having the words I want to say come out.
It means I understand others with disabilities.
It means I have a different perspective on the world.
It means wanting very much to have friends but not knowing how.
