Autism,ADD and ADHD

First of all ADHD and Autism are neither mental illnesses or learning disabilities. They are neurological conditions. You can find information on the NAMI site, but I had to clear that up.

Second, yes there is increasing evidence of a link between the two. Children with ADHD and Autism (Aspergers or PDD) have many common symptoms. Many children diagnosed with ADHD have autism go undiagnosed either due to the mildness of the autism or oblivious doctors. If you suspect your child may have autism, please make sure they are properly evaluated by a child psychologist (you can get the school district to pay for it, request an IEE )so they can receive the best educational and medical supports.

Also, if you suspect your child may have autism DO NOT give them stimulant medications such as Ritalin. These drugs can be very harmful to children with Autism and will do NOTHING for their “ADHD” if it isn’t actually ADHD. I suggest you Google – Autism ADHD. You will get a number of sites on this.
