Q: My daughter is 2 and newly diagnosed. she has a 7 yr old brother and a 7 month old sister. How will autism affect my daughters siblings?

Answer:

I all depends on the severity of your daughter. I have three childrend (10/girl, 9/boy – severly autistic, 6/boy). My daughter (oldest) doesn’t like having a lot of people older because my son scares the other girls. He has a fascination with long hair and he likes to touch it. So a 10 year old girl getting their hair touched by 9 year old boy who doesn’t talk and makes lot of funny noises is a bit much for most 10 year olds.

My six year old son just always warns his friends to stay away from his brother cause he pinches – he does.

Both of them love their special brother but both of them in their own ways avoids him when they have friends over.

The hardest part though is dealing with the loss of family time quite frankly. This may not happen to you but in our house my son cannot/will not go out. We don’t have a lot of family or friends we trust to watch him so school / sport events are split by the parents. We have schools friends parents that have thought we are divorced because we are never together. Also we now have to go on vacation without our son to make sure we can have “family” time with all.
