Why can’t autism be cured?
October 1st, 2007Autism is a neurological problem with the brain’s wiring gone awry (not a very scientific answer!), but children with autism can be taught strategies through different interventions that improve their sensory processing ability. Most of the children with autism that you see that withdraw do so because they are overstimulated by all the sensory input from the world around them; the lights, sounds, textures of their clothing, etc. overwhelm them and they shut them out. The things that therapists & teachers & parents do to help them doesn’t change their sensory processing, it just helps them cope better.
