Can children with autism receive SSI disability income?

October 6th, 2007

Children with autism Could receive the SSI disability income as well as Medic-aid benefits.

Call Social Security and ask them to send you an application for SSI. Make sure you have a doctor’s diagnosis of ASD. They will send the application and release of information medical forms so they may obtain medical information from any medical personnel who has dealt with your child. Often times they will conduct a telephone interview.

SSI will be based upon the family’s monthly income (they will ask for pay stubs and last year’s tax forms so have those ready to send).

Once the child has been approved for benefits (and SSI will pay back payments from the time you applied), you will need to open a bank account in the child’s and your names only. SSI will be direct deposited monthly.

Best wishes!
