Why do people with autism need advocacy and advocates
October 6th, 2007Usually for people with autism, while there are varying degrees of it, and not all need advocacy….a lot of people with this disorder do not have the ability to think logically. Their brain works in such a way that they will do things on the spur of the moment, they lack the emotion sometimes to make wise choices. They can put themselves at risk by this behaviour.
Autism is one word that describes hundreds of different behaviours, but basically, it is this lack of emotion that is prevalent in most people with autism, and its this lack of emotion that can get them into trouble….sometimes putting themselves in life threatening situations….so usually they need people to make “wise” choices for them.
Many people with autism have not got the ability to think before acting, therefore in a lot of cases, if thery didnt have an advocate they could get themselves in serious trouble. If you have been diagnosed with austism and believe you are quite capable to advocate for yourself, then you do have that right under the Disability Act, but maybe this may have to be decided in a court of Law if others, eg, parents, guardians think you could be a danger to yourself or others.
