Gifts for Children with Autism

Q:I volunteer 5 days a week with a boy who diagnosed as mildly autistic. He is 11 years old and a Disney fanatic. I’ve been working with him for six months and his birthday is coming up. I’m finding myself at a loss for ideas on what to give him. I don’t want to get him something that he cannot benefit from, educationally, but I don’t want to give him something that he’ll never play with. For Christmas I bought him a “Lady and the Tramp” book that we frequently read together, but I want to do more than that! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Children with Autism are specially smart in certain areas. If he likes reading, get more books, maybe a set of hardcover books or a collections from Disney. Books are the best educational enjoymnet for any child or adult that wants to learn.Autistic kids can enjoy many type of gifts as regular kids do.What I find interesting are building blocks such as Lego’s. You’ll be amaze by the creativity that comes out.

I know a boy who is Autistic and he is not able to spell his own name – BUT he is a brilliant Gamer – loves video games and can play & pass almost every game. He also attends local tournaments. (we think these game are helping him stratigically win at something & he gains self confidence)

You could ask him what he likes just to get a few hints.
