Unique characteristics of Autism
November 2nd, 2007The best way to learn of the unique characteristics of autistic children is to talk to parents who have raised their children with autism. There are so many ways to tailor interaction to help Autism Spectrum Children to integrate into society that it would be difficult to say what works for one child would work for another. It is a matter of what works – like for example, when young, the Blankie was my child’s source of soothing when the child encountered difficulty in school – the child took it to school, had it on the bus, rubbed it when upset, and yes, the child was made fun of by other children.
Most kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders CAN be integrated into regular classrooms with the help of an Aide – and they CAN learn – you just have to be willing to see the world through their eyes and reach them through their perspective. But be aware, they experience the world differently than you will, and it will take you some effort to really understand where they are coming from. And for your own sake – Watch what you say to an Autistic – they take things Literally.
