Resturant story of autism
November 14th, 2007Our duaghter with autism was, despite my best efforts really vocalizing in a local family resturant. Man at the next table said somehting. I said very politely (becasue usually when you say something politely people’s attitudes change) that he has autism and he is doing his best to behavior appropriately. He said something ruder??like I dont care what he has if he cant behave in public leave him home. So I decided to embarrass him and said loud engouh for the whole plave to hear “Sir, I already said I am sorry, he has autism and is doing the best he can, but I would appreciate it if you kept you disgusting comments to your self.” He said something I couldnt really hear but used the word institution. Isaid loud enough fo rthe whole place to hear “I don’t care if you think he should be in an institution, I thank God there are laws to protect him from people like you.”
Crowd reaction:
1. A kid comes over and give my duahgter his ice cream so she doesn’t have to wait.
2. A special ed teach came over to say how she wished all her parents were brave enough to take there kids out in public.
3. The waitress brought the mans order, apologizind saying she forgot to order his french fries, and then handed the french fires in her hand to my daughter.
4. A women, who must have been 85 accompanied by a middle aged 6????man who seemed to be a little developmentally disabled, walked past his table, and called him an asshole.
