When does a child with autism start speaking?

November 15th, 2007

It really depends on how severe is the condition. There is no prediction possible as to when the child will speak – if at all. How much verbal communication is also unpredictable. Some autistic children will be able to converse whereas some may only use disjointed words or even display what is known as “echolalia” (repeating what is said to him/her).

That DOES NOT mean they can not communicate. Some kids with autism may be able to speak but prefer not to speak as much as they know how to. Even those who do not speak CAN AND WILL communicate non-verbally by various means.

The family of children with autism will have to work closely with health professionals expecially speech pathologist, psychologist and speech therapist to maximise his/her communication potential.
