GFCF for autism is helping

In the past few months I have been learning about the GFCF(gluten free and casein free) diet and trying out recipes and such. Now my husband knows that the food isn’t all that bad and I have been sending testimonies of the kids it has helped. We have tried our best to go 100% GFCF this week … or so we thought. I am finding that there are things I have fed the kids that I thought were GFCF but some products had it in there under a different name. I know I will get better at this as time goes on.

I just wanted to share some things that have been happening. This week my son his said his leg stopped hurting. I always chalked his leg pain to growing pains but now I am thinking it is related to the allergy to Gluten and Casein. I noticed with my son he seems all around happier and his mood has been more stable than usual. When he gets tired he is grouchy but no like before where no one wanted to deal with him. He is asking for things that he used to eat alot like Mcdonald cheese burgers, cheese and more and I have been telling him he can’t have those foods because they are illegal. He seems to like the word illegal and he wants to know why I am suddenly saying things are illegal. He was mad at first but now he is already starting to ask if things are illegal. That worked out good with him. One strange thing happened he ended up with a rash on his butt. I figured out what it was. I made him ground up hamburger with some onions, a little garlic and added soy sauce to flavor it. I just assumed the soy sauce was GFCF it was not. I am pretty sure the combination of soy and wheat is not good for my son at all. Well at least I know.

My daughter – the results have been amazing as far as her speech goes. She has been saying her thoughts and responding some back and forth conversation. It is awesome. She is not fond of the food choices I have been giving her and refusing to eat. She will eat it when she gets to the point of deep hunger but not a minute sooner. I think she has been somewhat hungry and her hunger pains have been waking her up at night inspite of the melatonin. So she has been bouncing off the walls up the whole entire night and it is killing me but I know it is worth it. She also has been extremely difficult at that was even before we the GFCF diet and now it is worse. She is controlling everything. She refuses to wear long sleave shirts and she is telling me no all day and throws a fit over everything.

She refuses to go to school. I was telling her O.T. we have gone backwards that her autism is worse and that I am very frusterated. He told me that it is not because she is worse just the opposite the new behaviors are because she is getting better. She is more aware and is no longer in her own little world and she has new skills and she is using and letting people know verbally what isn’t going to fly now when before she couldn’t do it but she still uses the behaviors in combonation with the words so that is what makes it difficult. She was starting to become more aware prior to starting the GFCF diet but it seems to have given her a push forward with her speech. I am so happy about that. She told me last night in the middle of the night when I was trying to get her to sleep. Tomorrow I want to go outside and rake leaves OK! and she it kind of sarcastic like she was mad at me because I went out there yesterday and raked some leaves while she stayed inside. I had no clue she wanted to be out there with me raking. It melted my heart that she said what was on her mind and she didn’t use a behavior to communicate that. She didn’t stand at the door when I was out there throwing a fit that is why I didn’t know.
