People with autism have communication problems. They can hardly understand jokes, emotional expression, sarcasm or body languages. So in general, people on autism spectrum cannot do jobs that require high social communicate skills, like salesman, waitress and so on. On autism spectrum, there is this low functioning kind of autism, its name’s called Asperger’s Syndrome, short for AS. People with AS can live a normal life by theirselves most of the time, and many celebrities in history suffered from Asperger’s Syndrome, for example, Bill Gates, Al Gore, Kevin Mitnick and so on. They are all gifted and autistic.

Also, people with AS have very poor short-term working memory, however, they can do a better job than normal people at better long-term memory. And most of them are visual thinkers. Related research has pointed out that natural animals are visual thinker either. So they invented a kind of treatment for autism called animal therapy. Working with animals would be a good choice for individuals with autism.

It would be easier for people with autism to do one simple job at one time. Jobs with a well-defined goal or endpoint would be suitable. library science is a good choice. And accounting, engineering, computer programmers and software engineers are all worth to be considered. Anyway, autistic people should be good in a specialized field that don’t need too much social skills.

The key to successful employment for many individuals with autism is in seeking career choices that suit their specialized interests and talents.
